German cockroaches are not like Australian or American cockroaches. They are small (12 to 15mm), pale brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and they live indoors only. They breed in kitchens, behind dishwashers, inside microwave casings, under fridges, and in any warm humid void close to a food and water source. One female German cockroach can lay 40 eggs at a time and breed up to seven times in her short life. Left untreated, an infestation explodes in months.

Live activity: small light brown cockroaches with two dark stripes behind the head, mostly visible at night, often around the kitchen sink, dishwasher, microwave, or under appliances when you turn on the light.
Droppings: tiny black flecks like ground coffee, accumulating in kitchen cupboard corners, behind kettles and toasters, around cupboard hinges, inside drawers. Often the first sign before you actually see the cockroaches themselves.
Egg cases (ootheca): small brown capsules, around 8mm long, stuck to underside of shelves, behind appliances, inside cupboard hinges. The female German cockroach carries her ootheca until just before hatching, so finding cases means active breeding.
Smear marks: dark greasy stains along the edges of cupboards, on cupboard hinges, and where cockroaches travel between food and harbourage zones.
Smell: heavy infestations develop a distinct musty, oily smell, strongest around the kitchen and laundry. If you can smell it, the infestation is well established.

German cockroaches need warmth, moisture, and a food source close by. Their first choice in SE QLD homes is almost always: behind the dishwasher, inside the back of the microwave, under the fridge, in the rangehood motor housing, inside kettle and toaster bases, and in the wall void behind the kitchen sink.
