how to identify a bed bug problem
Common bed bug (Cimex lectularius)
Adults are 4 to 5mm long, oval, flat, reddish-brown. Wingless. Live for 6 to 12 months and can survive several months between blood meals. Females lay 1 to 5 eggs per day, with eggs hatching in 6 to 17 days depending on temperature.
Signs of a bed bug infestation
Bites: small red itchy welts, often in lines of 3 or 4 (the so-called “breakfast, lunch, and dinner” pattern), most commonly on arms, shoulders, and the upper back. Bites typically appear overnight and may take 24 to 48 hours to become visible. Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites, so the absence of bites does not mean the absence of bed bugs.
Blood spots on sheets: small rust-coloured dots on sheets and pillowcases, where bed bugs have been crushed during the night.
Black flecks: tiny black dots (faecal matter) along mattress seams, behind the headboard, in bed frame joints, and on bedside tables. Often appearing in small clusters.
Shed skins: translucent cast skins from moulting nymphs, found in the same locations as faecal matter.
Sweet musty smell: heavy infestations develop a distinctive sweet, musty odour, strongest near the bed itself.
