how termidor HE actually works
non-repellent. undetectable to termites.
The breakthrough in Termidor HE is the chemistry. Older termiticides (like the chlorpyrifos products used in the 1990s) were repellent: termites detected them and went around. Termidor is non-repellent, which means termites walk straight into the barrier without knowing it’s there.

Licensed inspector creates a trench along the entire external perimeter of the foundation, typically 50mm deep by 150mm wide.
inject
Concrete paths, driveways, slabs are drilled at intervals and Termidor HE injected beneath. Eliminates gaps in the barrier where termites could exploit.
saturate
Termiticide applied at the precise volume specified by manufacturer for the soil type, soil moisture, and treatment area. Creates a continuous protected zone.
transfer
Termites contact the barrier. Carry the lethal dose back to the colony via trophallaxis (social food exchange). Whole colony eliminated, not just the foragers.

how trelona baiting actually works
colony elimination. via the termites themselves.
Trelona is a different philosophy. Instead of creating a barrier termites avoid or cross, Trelona uses the termites’ own biology as the elimination mechanism. The system is monitored continuously, which means you get advance warning of any colony attempting to attack the property.
install
In-ground monitoring stations placed every 3 to 5 metres around the property perimeter. Stations contain a cellulose attractant matrix (untreated initially).
monitor
Quarterly monitoring visits. Inspector checks each station for termite activity. Most visits will be clear, but the system is constantly watching.
detect
When termite activity is found in a station, the cellulose matrix is replaced with a bait matrix containing an insect growth regulator (IGR). Termites continue feeding, unaware of the change.
distribute
Worker termites carry the IGR bait back to the colony. Feed it to the queen, the brood, the soldiers. The IGR prevents termites from moulting properly, so the colony cannot replace its workers.
eliminate
Within weeks, the colony collapses. No workers means no food gathering, no defence, no brood care. The colony is eliminated rather than repelled.

property layout and access
Termidor HE needs continuous trenched access around the entire foundation perimeter. If your property has complex landscaping, multiple structures, retaining walls, or concrete pads everywhere, a Trelona baiting system may be more practical. Properties with clear soil-access perimeter strongly suit Termidor.
soil conditions and water table
Termidor HE binds to soil and provides protection for years. Reactive clay soils, very sandy soils, or high water table areas reduce barrier longevity. We test soil conditions during the free assessment. Trelona is unaffected by soil conditions because it doesn’t rely on soil-bound active ingredient.
environmental and aesthetic preferences
Some property owners prefer not to have residual termiticide in the soil. Trelona is the right answer for them. Owners of homes near waterways, properties with edible gardens, or those wanting the most ecologically considerate option often choose Trelona. Both systems are APVMA-approved, but Trelona’s mechanism is biological rather than chemical-residual.

Adding a deck, pergola, or extension without retreating the disturbed soil zone. New plumbing trenches that aren’t retreated after backfilling. Garden tap relocations. Each disturbance creates a potential entry point.

Underground pipe leaks create moisture pockets that attract termites. Sewer line breaches under the slab. Roof drainage problems that direct water against the foundation. Moisture is what termites are looking for.

Soil settles over years. The barrier zone shifts. Cracks develop in slab edges. Foundation movement creates gaps where there were none. Annual inspection identifies these issues before termites do.
Why annual inspections matter for warranty: Termidor HE and Trelona warranties are conditional on annual AS 3660.2 inspections being maintained. Skip the inspection, void the warranty. The inspection cost is the warranty premium. We’ve seen too many cases where homeowners skipped inspections for two years, found termite damage, and had no warranty recourse because the inspection record was incomplete.

how long does a termite management system last?
Termidor HE chemical barriers have an effective lifespan of around 8 years before a top-up may be required. Trelona baiting systems provide continuous protection for as long as they are actively monitored and maintained. Both systems require annual inspections to maintain warranty.
are the chemicals safe for pets and family?
Yes. Termidor HE (fipronil-based) is designed with low toxicity to mammals. The termiticide is applied directly to soil and is not accessible to pets or family once treatment is complete. Trelona’s bait active ingredient is an insect growth regulator that only affects organisms that moult (insects).
if i have a management system do i still need annual termite inspections?
Yes. The Australian Standard recommends annual termite inspections even on homes with a management system in place. Inspections verify the system hasn’t been breached by landscaping, renovations, or natural settlement. Annual inspections are also required to maintain manufacturer warranty on most systems.
which is better, termidor or trelona?
Neither is universally better. Termidor HE suits properties with clear perimeter access, normal soil conditions, and owners who want long-lifespan low-maintenance protection. Trelona suits properties with complex layouts, environmental considerations, or owners who prefer biological elimination over chemical-residual approaches. We assess your specific property before recommending.
can you install a system if i already have active termites?
Yes, but the eradication treatment comes first. Active termite activity requires direct treatment of the colony (usually via Termidor HE direct application to active galleries, or Trelona baits at high-activity areas). Once activity is eliminated, we install the management system to prevent re-attack.
does the system work for new construction?
Yes. We install both Termidor HE pre-construction soil treatments and Trelona stations as part of new builds. Pre-construction treatment is significantly cheaper than retrofitting after the slab is poured and landscaping installed. If you’re building, talk to us during the slab stage.
does my home insurance cover termite damage?
In most cases, no. Termite damage is specifically excluded from standard home insurance policies in Australia because it’s considered preventable through routine inspections and management. This is why an inspected and managed home is significantly less risky financially than an unmanaged one.
how long does installation take?
A Termidor HE chemical barrier installation typically takes one full day for a standard 3-4 bedroom home. Trelona baiting system installation takes 2 to 4 hours. Both can be scheduled within 1 to 2 weeks of booking, with same-week emergency installation available for properties with active termite activity.
do you install kordon or termimesh physical barriers?
We don’t install physical barriers (Kordon, Termimesh) ourselves; those are typically installed during construction. We do inspect and certify them as part of AS 3660.2 inspections, and we recommend chemical or baiting systems as supplementary protection where physical barriers have been compromised.
