why se qld has so many ants

the gold coast is ant country.

Warm humid climate, sandy coastal soils, year-round food sources. South-East Queensland is one of the best ant-breeding regions in Australia. A single coastal brown ant colony can run 50,000 workers and split into satellite colonies through summer. By the time you see a trail across the kitchen bench, the colony is usually already established somewhere in the wall cavity, under the slab, or in the garden bed against the house.

Supermarket bait stations and surface sprays kill the ants you can see. They do not reach the queen. The colony replaces the workers within days. Professional ant control uses transfer products that workers carry back to the nest plus targeted gel bait the colony feeds on directly. That is the difference between watching ants disappear for a week and actually breaking the colony for the season.

know your ant

the species we treat most

Coastal brown ant (Pheidole megacephala)

The big one. Tiny brown workers (1.5 to 3mm) that travel in dense trails along skirting boards, around dishwashers, under pet bowls. By far the most common SE QLD ant. Responds very well to transfer-product spray plus a sweet gel bait at trail intercepts.

Black house ant (Ochetellus glaber)

Small (2-3mm), shiny black. Loves anything sweet. Trails into pantries and across kitchen benches. Often nests in roof voids and wall cavities. Same treatment approach as coastal brown but pairs especially well with our RoofProtect dust treatment (included in the 360° Ultimate).

White-footed house ant (Technomyrmex difficilis)

Larger (3-4mm), dark with pale feet. Forms supercolonies in the thousands. Often the culprit when you see ants pouring out of a power point or wall plate. Needs aggressive transfer-product spray to wall voids plus multiple bait points.

Sugar ant (Camponotus consobrinus)

Larger (5-15mm), orange and black, nocturnal. Outdoor colonies under pavers, retaining walls, garden mulch. Comes inside in numbers during heavy rain. PerimeterShield (included in 360° Ultimate) catches them at the threshold before they make it indoors.

Fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) , notifiable pest

Reddish-brown, aggressive, painful sting. Fire ants are a regulated biosecurity pest in QLD. If you suspect fire ants on your property, do not disturb the nest. Report to the Fire Ant Suppression Program on 13 11 10 and we can arrange a follow-up inspection. We do not treat fire ants directly because the program manages eradication.

winged ant or winged termite?

If you have just seen swarming winged insects around your home, especially after rain, you may be wondering whether it is an ant or a termite. The difference matters because termites need a completely different treatment program. Here is the quick visual identifier:

If you are seeing termite alates (winged termites), book a termite inspection immediately rather than an ant treatment.

questions

ant control faq

How long does an ant treatment take?

Most ant treatments take 45 to 75 minutes for a standard Gold Coast home. We work room by room, treat external perimeter, then set bait at active trail intercepts. The actual time depends on how many trails are active and how many nest sites we identify on inspection.

Are the products safe for kids and pets?

Yes. We use professional low-toxicity formulations applied to Australian Standards. Once the product is dry (usually within 30 to 60 minutes) your home is safe for kids and pets. We use gel bait inside cupboards instead of spray where food prep happens. If you have fish tanks, frogs, or sensitive reptiles, let us know at booking so we can adjust the plan.

How quickly will the ants disappear?

You will usually see ant activity drop 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Total colony collapse typically takes 7 to 14 days, as the workers carry transfer product and gel bait back to the queen. Seeing a few stragglers in the first week is normal and a good sign , the bait is doing its work.

Do you treat fire ants?

No. Fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) are a notifiable biosecurity pest in QLD and are managed by the National Fire Ant Eradication Program. If you suspect fire ants on your property, do not disturb the nest. Report it to 13 11 10. We can run a follow-up general pest inspection once the program has done its work.

What if ants come back?

Every Annual Guardian and 360° Ultimate treatment carries the PestiesProtect+ money-back guarantee. If covered ant activity returns inside the warranty window, send us a photo and we book a free service call. Full T&Cs on our warranty page (linked in the PestiesProtect+ section below).

Will one treatment be enough?

For most SE QLD homes, yes. The Annual Guardian or 360° Ultimate treatment plus correct bait placement breaks the colony cycle for the season. We recommend an annual treatment to stay ahead of new colonies that move in over time, especially through summer.
